The flight to Europe
More than 12 million people have fled from war and devastation in war-torn Syria. Many are living as refugees in neighboring countries, such as in the Beka'a valley in Lebanon. Here, they lack the most basic things such as clean water, sanitation and money for food. But the day the refugees Samir and Shrook married, the whole camp contributed, and was able to enjoy a day of celebration and joy.
The Syrian refugees follow a route trough Turkey, then a dangerous crossing with inflatable boats to the Greek islands such as Lesvos and Kos. Here, they wait for days to get permit papers to travel by ferry to Athens, before they continue to Macedonia by bus.
I travelled the route. And I followed the four friends Ismail, Ehsan, and the brothers Mohamed and Abdulah, from Greece trough the Balkans before they finally arrived in Germany.
- I want to return to a peaceful Syria. That is why I participated in the revolution. And I dream of seeing my girlfriend and my family again, says Abdulah.
